In Gadero TV episode 246, Quinten is hard at work on our showroom grounds. He explains all about roof trim and how to use it. Want to find out more? Read on!
Why use roof trim?
Roof trim is perfect to create a sleek finish for the roof of your canopy, garden room, or log cabin. Aside from looking good, roof trim also ensures that the cladding on your roof stays in place by clamping down the edges. Roof trim can be used with EPDM film, bituminous membrane, and Easyroofing film.
Roof cladding that is not properly secured may get caught by the wind, and slowly start to let go over time. This can be prevented by securing the edges of, for example, EPDM film with roof trim. This trim has an L-shaped design for a good fit between the film or membrane and the edge of your roof. In addition, the trim has a raised edge to prevent rainwater from spilling over the edge of your roof.
How to install roof trim?
Roof trim has to be secured using special screws. These screws have a rubber washer to make sure the trim remains watertight. We recommend our 4.9 x 35 mm galvanised Wovar roof tile sheet screws, or 4.8 x 32 mm Torx stainless steel and polycarbonate screws with nylon washer.
Sections of roof trim can be joined with a connector. This small plate slides into the roof trim, after which it joins with the next section. Note that the edges of your trim may be sharp - so take all due care, and wear protective gloves.
Installing roof trim step-by-step
Step 1: "Instal your roof cladding " Make sure the roof cladding extends slightly past the edge of the roof.
Step 2: "Saw the roof trim to size" The different roof trim sections all have the same lengths. Straight sections are always 20 cm long, and corner sections are always 50 cm on both sides. Roof trim can be sawn to size using a hacksaw.
Step 3: "Connect the sections of trim" The sections of roof trim can be joined up using connectors. These small metal plates slide into the sections of trim on either side - slide the plate into the first section, and then slide the next section over it.
Step 4: "Secure the roof trim in place" For every section of trim, use 4 self-tapping screws to fix it in place. Make sure not to tighten the screws too much, as this may cause the rubber washer to buckle and let in moisture.
Types of roof trim
Our roof trim uses high-quality aluminium, and is available in two colours: anthracite and natural aluminium. In addition, roof trim is available in two shapes: the 250 cm straight sections, and the 50 by 50 cm corner sections.
